General & Getting Started
What is the difference between Part 61 and Part 141 training?
Part 61 is the flexible, proficiency-based pathway used by the vast majority of successful professional pilots. It allows customized training, accelerated schedules, and no rigid curriculum constraints.
At Sheble 66 Aviation we operate exclusively under Part 61 so we can adapt to your experience, schedule, and goals. You train to proficiency — not to a minimum hour count that often forces unnecessary flying at other schools. The result is usually faster completion and lower total cost while meeting or exceeding FAA standards.
Why choose Sheble 66 Aviation over larger “airline pipeline” schools?
We are a family-owned, full-service Part 61 school specializing in the ratings that actually open doors: single- and multi-engine seaplane, commercial multi-engine, CFI, and ATP.
Our instructors are highly experienced (including JoJo Sheble — CFI/CFII/MEI/A&P/IA/ATP with single & multi land/sea, commercial helicopter, and multiple type ratings). We deliver one-on-one attention, direct DPE coordination, year-round excellent weather (350+ VFR days), and package pricing that is among the most competitive in the industry. You finish faster and spend less while gaining real operational skills on the Colorado River and in multi-engine aircraft.
Do you train foreign pilots?
Yes. We regularly train international students. We guide you through the TSA Flight Training Security Program (FTSP) process, English language standards, and any foreign license conversion under FAR 61.75. Our accelerated Part 61 structure is ideal for pilots who need to complete ratings efficiently while managing visa timelines.
What medical certificate do I need?
A current FAA medical is required for most certificates and ratings (third-class is sufficient for private and many recreational paths; second-class or higher is needed for commercial privileges). We can advise on BasicMed options where applicable and help you schedule an AME if needed.
Private Pilot & Instrument
How much does an initial Private Pilot License (ASEL) cost?
Initial Private Pilot (ASEL) packages range from $20,000 to $25,000 depending on your starting experience and pace. This is a complete, accelerated Part 61 program designed to get you certificated efficiently in excellent Arizona flying weather.
I already have some experience — can I just finish my Private or add ratings?
Yes. Add-on Private Pilot (ASEL) is $3,895. Private/Instrument finish-up packages start at $4,995–$7,995. We evaluate your logbook and create a customized plan so you only pay for the training you actually need.
How much is the Instrument Rating?
Initial Instrument (ASEL) is $9,995. Initial Instrument (AMEL) is $17,345. We also offer combined Private/Instrument finish-up options. Training occurs at a non-towered airport with multiple instrument approaches, two runways, and a practice area only five minutes away — you train where you will be tested.
Commercial & Multi-Engine
What is the CAMEL (Commercial Airplane Multi-Engine Land) add-on?
Our CAMEL package is one of the most complete and efficient multi-engine commercial add-ons available. It includes:
- Study pack + pre-arrival Google Meet with your CFI
- 10 hours of ground instruction
- 2–3 hours in our Redbird simulator (emergencies, instrument approaches, airwork, setup procedures)
- 7 hours of dual flight instruction
- Aircraft for the checkride
- Pre-arranged DPE checkride
Daily schedule typically includes 2.5–3 hours of flight plus ground and post-flight debrief. VFR weather 350 days a year. Pricing: VFR CAMEL $5,559 / IFR CAMEL $5,995.
How fast can I complete Commercial Single-Engine or Multi-Engine?
- Initial Commercial (ASEL) – 6-day program: $6,695
- Initial Commercial (ASEL) – 10-day program: $8,495
- Add-on Commercial (ASEL): $4,195
- Initial Commercial (AMEL) – 6-day: $7,895

Our accelerated structure and dedicated instructors (including Gavin, CFII/MEI) keep you moving efficiently.
Seaplane Ratings – Our Specialty
Why get a seaplane rating at Sheble?
Earn your Single-Engine Seaplane (ASES) rating on one of the most beautiful and navigable waterways in the nation — the majestic Colorado River. Training is based in Needles, California, between Lake Havasu City and Lake Mohave.
You will experience glassy water, rough water, confined areas, countless beaches, docking opportunities, boat traffic, sailing, mooring, and securing — real-world conditions from day one. Break for lunch at riverside restaurants (66 Grill, Pirates, Turtle Riverside, and more). It is fun, challenging, and produces world-class seaplane pilots.
What does the ASES package include and cost?
$3,295 + checkride fee (examiner fee currently $1,000).
- 2 hours ground review
- 5–7 hours of flight training
- Checkride on the third day
Typical schedule: two days of training + checkride day. Commercial SES and CFI-SES options are also available. Multi-Engine Sea (AMES) add-on is $10,000.
Is there a written test for the seaplane rating?
No. The seaplane class rating is proficiency-based only — ground and flight training followed by an oral and practical test. No FAA knowledge test is required for the add-on.
